Simple Daily Habits That Help You Maintain an Organized, Clutter-Free Home

It's time to refresh your space. Say "goodbye" to winter and "hello, oh how I've missed you" to warmer weather!
As we make this long awaited swap, it presents the perfect opportunity to develop new habits necessary to maintaining a happy home.
I don't know about you, but the thought of "spring cleaning" is daunting. Am I really supposed to find the time to go through the WHOLE house? Rush through it and exhaust myself just for the chaos to accumulate again? No, thank you.
Spring cleaning will be a thing of the past when you develop these habits that make a happy home maintainable. Lets breakdown 3 things you can do daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonally!
If you're a list girly/person like me... write these down!
Daily Habits
One: Put it Away, Don't Put it Down
If you're already holding something put it away, not on the nearest surface. You'll be surprised how much time you save when you don't have to return to it later.
Two: Clear Your Counters
Things accumulate, that's life. At the end of the day make sure they've found their way back home.
Pro Tip: If small things like change or rubber bands tend to find their way to your countertops, consider placing a small dish on your counter to contain these items.
Three: Sort Papers into "To Do" and "File"
Create a system that allows you to avoid going through papers multiple times trying to figure out what needs to be done. Whether it's a bin on the counter or a filing system on the wall, label one "to do" and the other "file" so you know exactly what needs to be done with each.
Pro Tip: If you have children, consider a bin for "arts and crafts" or creating their own system.
Weekly Habits
One: Meal Plan with the Food you Have
Check out what's in your fridge and pantry. Use these as a starting point for meal planning so food doesn't go to waste.
Two: Tidy Floors and Surfaces
Much like your counters, things accumulate on your floors and surfaces. If you've put it away instead of down, and cleared your counter at the end of each day, this will be a breeze. Walk through your home and make sure anything out of place returns to where it belongs.
Three: Empty the "To Do" and "File" Bins
Your papers are already sorted and that much easier to take care of. Now, that's efficiency! Are you starting to see how these habits work together, streamlining the systems in your home?
Monthly Habits
One: Toss Expired Foods
It happens, food expires... out with the old and in with the new! If you've been using the foods you have to meal prep weekly, this will take less than two minutes.
Two: Donations and Returns
Take care of any necessary returns. Then take whatever you're not using or no longer need and donate it!
Are you thinking you don't have enough to justify the trip?
Pro Tip: Create a space for a "donation" bin and a "returns" bin. Now every time you come across an item that fits one of these categories, it has a home to return to. Instead of taking up space for items you actually need and use, you'll be able to see how these things accumulate over time.
Three: Clean Out Your Car
Your car gets lived in too, which means it also accumulates things. Take a moment to clear out what no longer belongs.
Seasonal Habits
One: Refresh Your Closet
Maybe this means swapping out winter items for summer, or maybe it means going through and getting rid of what you didn't actually use or need this season. This would be the perfect opportunity to put that donation bin to good use.
Two: Get Rid of What You Didn't Use
We store things all year we think we'll use when the season arrives... then we don't. Be honest with yourself and let go of it, whether it's old decor, old hobbies, or old clothes.
Three: Store with a Purpose
Organize all the items going back into storage for the next season. Make it easy for yourself next season by labeling, untangling wires, and putting things away in reverse order to the way you take it out (what you need first will be easiest to grab).
Your home is supposed to be a sanctuary, a place to escape the stressors of the world. What would be the point in allowing tasks and clutter to accumulate into a massive stressor you conquer only once a year?
Your home can cause stress or help you escape from it.
It's time to break that cycle. Lets organize to simplify your life, not just your space.
Maintaining your sanctuary is only a few habits away!
With these happy home habits, there's no more mad dash to get your home in order for spring. You've streamlined maintainece. You made it easy. You can relax.
